A 5-day, Family-Friendly Winter Itinerary in Big Sky, MT:

A family-friendly adventure awaits you this winter in Big Sky!  From snowy adventures and ski lessons to cozy evenings and non-skiing activities, we’ve curated a fun-filled itinerary for the entire family, suitable for children ages 4 +.

 

Day 1 (Arrival):

Afternoon/Evening Arrival:

  • Check in to your family-centered accommodations. 
  • Pick up your ski rental gear or have your rental gear delivered, and if able, grab your  Big Sky Resort Sky Card from one of the Resort’s Sky card express stations. 
  • 5-7 pm – After a long day of travel, order pizza to be delivered to your accommodations from Blue Moon Bakery. 
  • 7-9 pm – tuck in for a good night’s sleep.

 

Day 2 (Ski Lessons):

  • 7-9 am– fuel up, layer up, and pack some snacks in your child’s pockets.  You’ll be spending a full day at Big Sky Resort, so bring sturdy winter boots and extra layers to change into after the ski day. 
  • 9-10 am –meet your child’s instructor for the day.  For younger children, we recommend half-day lessons.  
  • 11-1 pm – Pickup time for younger children with half-day instruction.  Grab some lunch and take a little rest before heading back outside. 
  • 1- 2:30 pm – For smaller children– head outside, play in the snow, and take the beginner carpet through the blue bubbles for a few more laps together. 
  • 2:30 pm– (on Mondays and Wednesdays), enjoy s’mores in the Mountain Village Plaza. 
  • 4 pm –skiing is done for the day.  Warm up and enjoy some hot cocoa.
  • 4:30-5 pm— (on Mondays and Wednesdays), head to the avalanche dog meet & greet in the mountain village plaza. 
  • 4:30-6 pm –  Stay on resort property and enjoy some appetizers and burgers at Montana Jack.  
  • 6-8 pm – Hop on the Ramcharger 8 lift to experience the Enchanted forest at the top of Andesite mountain.  Tickets must be reserved in advance by visiting Big Sky resort’s website. 
  • 8 pm – Head back to your accommodations. 

 

Day 3 (non-skiing day):

  • 7-9 am – a slow morning wake up.  Grab coffee and breakfast at Cowboy Coffee Co. in town center. 
  • 10-12 pm – head to the Ousel Falls Trailhead for a family hike.  Remember to pack water, extra layers, and your camera!  This trail is 1.6 miles roundtrip.
  • 12 pm – Lunchtime.  Enjoy a lunch on-the-go with sandwiches at the Hungry Moose Market & Deli.  Don’t forget to grab some of Uncle Dan’s cookies and rice crispy treats before checking out. 
  • 1- 3 pm – rent ice skates at East Slope Outdoors and head to the Marty Pavelich rink. 
  • 3 pm – retreat to your accommodations for a little pre-dinner rest. 
  • 5 pm – Head to dinner at Alberto’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine in town center. 
  • 7 pm – Return to your hotel or rental for the evening. Prepare a Yellowstone snowcoach tour the next day.  Pack snacks, extra layers, water, and a camera. 

 

Day 4 (Yellowstone day):

  • 7 am -- wake up and have breakfast in your hotel or rental. 
  • 8 am -- be at the pickup location for your snowcoach tour. 
  • 8- 5 pm -- enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience as you explore Yellowstone National Park in winter.  Be prepared to bring your lunch, or purchase a box lunch when you book your tour. 
  • 5-7 pm -- Stop at the Riverhouse for some casual and delicious BBQ dining. 

 

Day 5 (Departure):

  • Enjoy a leisurely morning and check out of your accommodations. 
  • Grab a big breakfast as you head out of town at Cafe 191. 
  • Bid farewell to Big Sky and celebrate all the beautiful family memories you made.
