PLAN YOUR TRIP
Big Sky is a place that welcomes you year-round, offering a unique and authentic Montana experience in every season. While our summer and winter months are filled with the vibrant energy of skiing, hiking, and exploring, our spring and fall seasons offer a quiet escape, where a sense of peaceful solitude settles over the landscape. Whether you’re chasing a day of fresh powder, watching the first wildflowers bloom, or simply seeking a serene escape from the everyday, there is truly no bad time to visit. No matter the season, our community is ready to help you plan your perfect adventure, from exploring our surrounding wild spaces to venturing into nearby Yellowstone National Park.
Summer Fun
Big Sky bursts to life in summer! Hike and bike on a network of trails while spotting wildflowers along the way. Embark on a family adventure with ziplining, horseback riding, ATVs, or white-water rafting. Cast a line, enjoy the views, and soak up the starry night skies. Summer in Big Sky is what dreams are made of. Visitors during this time of year will also enjoy the local community-centered activities, including the Farmers Market on Wednesday nights and free Music in the Mountains on Thursday nights. Most of our summer visitors also take advantage of this season and travel into Yellowstone National Park. The west entrance to the Park is only 50 miles from Big Sky.
Winter Thrills
Winter in Big Sky, Montana, is the main event and for good reason! With world-class skiing at Big Sky Resort offering 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, skiing and snowboarding are at the top of most winter travelers' lists when visiting Big Sky. But that's not all! There is a lot to explore off the slopes throughout the Big Sky Community. Lone Mountain Ranch offers an expansive network of Nordic Ski Trails. Dog-sledding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice skating, and snowmobiling are just a few of many activities that winter visitors can add to their itinerary. Plus, festive and family-friendly events such as The Big Sky Christmas Stroll and the Best in the West Skijoring Showdown are all part of the fun. Whether you want to explore the quiet backcountry or dive into the heart of our community, a Big Sky winter has something for everyone.
Shoulder Seasons
Often known as our "shoulder seasons," both Spring and Fall bring a special kind of quiet solitude to Big Sky that's unlike any other time of year. While our community takes a breath and certain services at Big Sky Resort and in town shift with the rhythm of the seasons, it's a beautiful tradeoff for those who love a secluded, intentional adventure. You'll find yourself sharing the trails with more wildlife than people, enjoying the peace of a golden autumn afternoon, or witnessing the first signs of spring with wildflowers and rushing rivers. It's also one of the best times to experience Yellowstone National Park without the summer crowds, offering a more personal and authentic glimpse into the wild heart of our region. For those who seek serenity over energy, these seasons are a truly wonderful time to visit.
