Welcome to the quiet beauty of September in Big Sky.
As summer starts to wind down, the temperatures drop slightly, the mountain peaks often see their first dusting of snow, and the colors of fall begin to paint the scenic landscapes. September is prime time to enjoy a bit of rest while still having access to mountain adventures.
Things To Do:
With fewer crowds and less summer heat, it's a great time to get outside in Big Sky. Here is our suggested list of things to do during this quieter time of year.
Hit the trails: It's a perfect time to visit some of Big Sky's more popular hiking trails, as there is a smaller chance of running into crowds of people. Cooler temps also make longer hikes more enjoyable, but be prepared! September weather can change quickly. Be sure to bring plenty of layers, water, and of course, bear spray.
Mountain Biking: The downhilll trails at Big Sky Resort stay open well into the middle of September, and once they close for the season, there are still plenty of cross-country options in the area to keep you rolling on two wheels.
Fly-Fishing: With less people on the river, fly-fishing in Big Sky is picturesque and serene during this time of year.
Trail Rides: As the colors begin to change, September is a great time to experience gorgeous landscapes via horseback. Many local outfitters are open and still offering trail rides during this time of year.
Golf: The Big Sky public golf course is still open in September. This par-72 course offers some of the most scenic views in town.
The Farmers Market: September is the final month of the Big Sky Farmers Market. Stroll town center while enjoying local produce, food vendors, and unique handcrafted gifts.
Live Music: Enjoy the last show for Music in the Mountains, generally the first Thursday in September. Smaller venues throughout town will also offer live music. Check out Big Sky's music calendar for up-to-date information.
Special Events: Cheer on racers at The Rut Mountain Race at Big Sky Resort, or raise a stein at the Big Sky Oktoberfest held in town center.
With a variety of things to see and do, the fun doesn't stop in September. Besides local activities, it's also a great time to take a drive and visit Yellowstone National Park. With fewer crowds, cooler temperatures and scenic landscapes, September is a beautiful time of year to escape to Big Sky.
